My dad, Anthony Ronald Clayton, was my inspiration in more ways than one.
He lived in Liston Mill, a 17th-century water mill in the English countryside. I used to tell him he should rename it Claymill. He never would. He respected where things came from and wanted to keep the original name. So when it came time to name my own business, I knew exactly what to call it.
Dad spent more than 30 years in the leather and upholstery industry before going out on his own. He started from nothing but an idea and the will to make it work. The bank held the family home as security, and because I was over 16, I had to sign off on it too. It’s a lesson in commitment I’ve never forgotten. I was always in awe of his work ethic and his dedication.

After 30 years in construction, I followed his lead. In 2023 I started Claymill the same way he started his business: with an idea and not much else.
We’re going well, and we hold the same values he did: a strong work ethic, a focus on the customer, honesty, and above all, hard work.
Dad passed away just as Claymill was getting off the ground, so I never got to show him how much his example shaped what I’ve built. I miss him every day. He’s always in my thoughts, and that continues to drive me, and Claymill, forward.
A mill takes raw material and turns it into something useful. That’s what we do every day.
